What to include, and what not to worry about
When you request service, the useful details are the boring ones. What you saw or heard or smelled. Which room, and whether anything is above or below it. When it started, and whether it is constant or comes and goes. Whether anything has already been done about it — a previous clearing, a previous repair, a previous opinion — and what you were told at the time. What you do not need is a diagnosis. A guess at the cause is the least useful thing in the message, because working out the cause is the job and a confident wrong guess quietly steers the first hour in the wrong direction. "I do not know what this is" is a completely normal opening. One thing genuinely worth doing first, if you can: turn off every fixture and appliance that uses water and watch the meter for fifteen minutes. Whether it moves is one of the highest-value facts in this whole trade, and it costs you a quarter of an hour.
