Why a drain keeps clogging after it has been cleared

A cable or auger works by punching through. It bores a channel through whatever is blocking the line, water starts moving again, and the job reads as finished — but the material that caused the blockage is still on the pipe wall, minus a hole the width of the cutting head. From that moment the channel starts narrowing again, which is why a cleared drain so often comes back rather than staying clear. What is left behind depends on the pipe. In a kitchen line it is usually grease and food solids congealed into a lining that gets thicker every wash. In an older cast iron or clay line it is scale and root hair, which give incoming waste something to catch on. In a line with a sag or a belly, it is standing water that never fully drains, so solids settle at the low point every single day. And in a sewer lateral it is very often fine roots that have found a failed joint, been cut back to the pipe wall, and simply grown again toward the same moisture. None of those are fixed by clearing faster. The useful question when a drain keeps clogging is not how to reopen it but what is on the wall, what shape the pipe is in, and whether the line still falls the way it was built to.

What the pattern tells you about the cause

  • One fixture only, blocking every year or soLocal buildup in that fixture branch. Kitchen lines accumulate grease; bathroom lines accumulate hair and soap. The line is doing its job, just through a narrowed opening.
  • Cleared, fine for months, then identical againA residue-lined pipe rather than a one-off obstruction. The gap is roughly how long the remaining opening took to close up again — not a number to plan around, but a strong hint that the pipe wall, not bad luck, is what you are dealing with.
  • Two or more fixtures slowing at the same timeThe restriction has moved downstream to something they share. This is a different and more serious problem than a single slow drain.
  • A toilet that gurgles when the shower or washer runsAir being pulled through a trap because drainage they share is partly restricted. It is frequently the early warning that precedes a main-line backup.

Finding the cause instead of the blockage

Get the pipe on cameraA camera fed through a cleanout shows the pipe material, the thickness of any lining, root intrusion, cracks, offset joints, and low spots holding water — along with how far in each one sits. That distance is what turns "somewhere in the drain" into a specific defect at a specific point.
  3. Read what the footage actually showsGrease lining, scale, root hair and a structural defect look different and lead to different work. Ask to see the footage rather than only the conclusion, and ask for a copy of it — it is also the baseline you would compare against next time.
  4. Match the method to the pipe conditionScouring the full diameter is the right answer for residue and roots in sound pipe, and the wrong one for a line that is already cracked or badly offset. That is exactly why the camera pass comes before the decision rather than after it.
  5. Re-inspect after the work, not just beforeA second camera pass is what proves the pipe wall is actually clear rather than merely flowing. Without it, "it drains now" is the same evidence you had after the last clearing.

What actually ends the cycle

Mechanical clearing

Fits when: A genuine one-off obstruction — something dropped, flushed or washed down that does not belong in a drain.

Trade-off: Fast and appropriate when the pipe behind the blockage is clean. Used on a lined or root-infested pipe it restores flow and resets the clock, which is the pattern people arrive here describing.

Full-diameter scouring

Fits when: Grease lining, scale, or root hair in a pipe whose structure the camera shows to be sound.

Trade-off: Removes the material rather than boring through it, so the interval before the next problem is genuinely reset rather than shortened. It requires the pipe to be strong enough to take it, which is a camera question, not a guess.

Correcting the defect

Fits when: A camera has found a cracked section, an offset joint, a failed connection, or a sag holding standing water.

Trade-off: The only option that addresses a cause cleaning cannot touch. More disruptive and more expensive, and the alternative is paying to clear the same defect indefinitely.

Changing what enters the line

Fits when: A kitchen line that relines with grease on a predictable cycle, or a fixture catching hair and solids.

Trade-off: Costs almost nothing and genuinely lengthens the interval — cooling fats into the bin rather than the sink, strainers on shower and kitchen wastes. It is a mitigation, not a repair, and it will not out-run a structural defect.

Questions people ask

Is chemical drain cleaner worth trying first?

Sparingly, and not repeatedly. It can shift a light soap or hair blockage in a fixture branch, but it does very little to a thick grease lining or to roots, and it sits in the pipe when it fails to clear. Repeated use on older metal pipe is not kind to it, and a line already holding caustic product is a hazard for whoever opens it next — so if you have used any, say so before anyone works on that drain.

How often is too often for a drain to need clearing?

Once is an event. Twice on the same line is a pattern, and it is the point at which paying for a camera pass costs less than the third clearing. A drain that has never blocked and suddenly does is a different problem from one that has blocked repeatedly, and they deserve different responses.

Can roots really get into a drain that is not the sewer line?

They get into anything buried that leaks, because they are following moisture rather than seeking pipe. In practice that means the sewer lateral and buried yard drains — interior branch lines above the slab are not exposed to them. If roots are in the picture, the search moves outdoors, which is a good thing to know before anyone opens a wall.

Should I rent a drain machine and do it myself?

For a fixture branch you can reach through a cleanout, it is a reasonable thing to attempt. Two cautions: a powered cable can damage older or already-cracked pipe, and it will do the same thing a professional cable does — restore flow without removing what is on the wall. If the drain has blocked before, you would be buying the same temporary result at a lower price rather than a different outcome.

Why did the plumber not just tell me the cause last time?

Often because nobody looked. Clearing a drain does not require seeing inside it, so a clearing-only visit genuinely cannot say whether the pipe is lined, cracked, sagging or root-infested. That is not a criticism of the work — it is a description of its limits, and the reason a camera pass is a separate step rather than something included by default.

The drain is clear now but it still smells. Why?

Flow can be restored while material remains in the line, and material sitting in standing water in a sag will keep producing odour. A trap that has dried out, or a vent problem, can also let sewer gas into the room independently of any blockage. Persistent smell after a clearing is a reason to look inside the pipe rather than to clear it again.
