Describe the history so farThe decision between the two is not really about how bad the current leak is — a pinhole and a split can both be repaired for less than a replacement costs. It is about whether the failure is representative of the whole line's condition. A single accidental failure on a younger line, in reasonable material, is a repair. A failure that is the latest in a series, or that shows up on a pipe material and age known to fail by corrosion along its length, is a replacement conversation whether or not this particular leak is large. Getting that distinction right up front is what keeps a homeowner from paying for three repairs across two years on a line that needed replacing after the first one.

A longer or deeper service line is more pipe and more excavation regardless of method.
Where trenchless genuinely applies, it usually reduces restoration cost; where it does not, forcing it is not the saving it looks like.
Driveways, mature trees, and hardscape all change both the method and the making-good afterward.
An old line sometimes meets newer code requirements at the meter or the point of entry that get addressed at the same time rather than separately.
A meaningful share of San Diego County housing stock still carries its original service line from construction, and where that construction predates modern plastic and copper standards, the line is often galvanised steel — a material that fails by corroding along its whole length rather than at one point. Combined with San Diego's hard water, which the city reports in the range of 216 to 284 parts per million total hardness, a galvanised or ageing copper line under sustained mineral load is simply on a shorter clock than the same material would be somewhere with softer water. Slab-on-grade construction, common across much of the county, also shapes which replacement method applies: a service line running under a slab or driveway is exactly the case trenchless methods exist for, since opening the surface for its full length is the expensive alternative.
National City's older housing stock is the county's clearest case for original-material service lines nearing the end of their working life, and Escondido's older downtown core carries a smaller version of the same pattern.
Not always in the moment, but usually over time — two or three repairs on the same ageing line can add up to more than one replacement, plus the disruption of each separate dig. The relevant comparison is against the pattern, not against a single repair.
