Tell us when you smell itA drainage system is open to the sewer at one end by design, and it stops that gas entering the building using two things. The first is the trap under every fixture: a bend that holds a small amount of water, and that water is a physical seal. The second is the vent system, a set of pipes that run up through the roof so that when a large volume drains, air is drawn from outside rather than pulled through the traps. So a sewer smell in the house is always one of a small number of failures in that arrangement. A trap has lost its water, through evaporation in an unused fixture or by being siphoned dry. A seal at a fixture has failed — most commonly under a toilet. A vent is blocked, cracked, or terminates somewhere it should not, so the system pulls air through traps instead of through the roof. Or a drain line itself is cracked and leaking gas directly into a wall, a floor void, or the ground under the house. That list is short, which is good news: the diagnosis is mostly a matter of elimination, and the first two possibilities are things you can check yourself in a few minutes without any tools at all.
Both are possible, and the difference is concentration. Trace amounts from a dry trap are mostly a nuisance. Sustained exposure is not: public health guidance describes eye and throat irritation, headache and fatigue at low concentrations of hydrogen sulphide, with people who have asthma reacting at lower levels than others. Two things follow. Do not use the smell as your gauge — the ability to detect it is lost after a few minutes of exposure at higher concentrations, so it fading is not evidence it has gone. And because the gas is heavier than air and settles in low, enclosed spaces, a basement or crawlspace is where a nuisance becomes a hazard. Ventilate, keep out of enclosed low spaces, and do not sleep in an affected room.
If refilling a trap only helps temporarily, something is emptying it again — most often siphoning, which happens when the vent system cannot supply air and a large drain event pulls the water out of a nearby trap. That is a vent problem rather than a fixture problem, and it will keep recurring until the vent side is investigated.
Yes, and it is worth checking the cheap explanations before assuming a structural fault. Biological buildup in an overflow, a washing machine standpipe, or a garbage disposal produces a genuinely foul smell with a completely sound drainage system behind it. Those are localised to one fixture, though — a smell that moves around a house is not one of them.
Non-toxic smoke is introduced into the drainage system under low pressure, and anywhere it escapes is a place gas can escape too. It finds cracks inside walls, failed seals, and vent faults that no amount of inspection would reveal, because it tests the whole system at once rather than one fixture at a time.
Which room, what time of day, whether it tracks the weather or the heating and cooling, and whether refilling the traps changed anything. That timing usually narrows it to one of three causes before we arrive.
