A sewer smell in the house means a seal has been lost somewhere

Drainage is designed so that gas cannot come back up it. When it does, something in that defence has failed — and which one it is comes down to when and where you smell it.

When and where it happens narrows it fast

  • A guest bathroom or floor drain that is rarely usedAlmost always a dried-out trap. The water seal that blocks the gas evaporates when nothing refills it, and the fix is to pour water down it.
  • Around the base of a toilet, worse when it is flushedA failed seal where the toilet meets the drain, or a loose fixing letting it rock. Any movement in the pan when you lean on it supports this.
  • A smell that arrives when the heating or air conditioning runsAir pressure in the building changing and drawing gas in through whatever opening exists. The system is not the cause; it is revealing the path.
  • Worse in warm weather, or when the wind is in one directionConsistent with a vent problem or an outdoor source being pushed back toward the building rather than dispersing above the roof.
  • A smell plus slow drainage or gurglingSomething is restricted, and gas is escaping past whatever is holding it back. This one belongs with the drainage symptoms rather than as a smell on its own.

Why a sewer smell in the house is possible at all

A drainage system is open to the sewer at one end by design, and it stops that gas entering the building using two things. The first is the trap under every fixture: a bend that holds a small amount of water, and that water is a physical seal. The second is the vent system, a set of pipes that run up through the roof so that when a large volume drains, air is drawn from outside rather than pulled through the traps. So a sewer smell in the house is always one of a small number of failures in that arrangement. A trap has lost its water, through evaporation in an unused fixture or by being siphoned dry. A seal at a fixture has failed — most commonly under a toilet. A vent is blocked, cracked, or terminates somewhere it should not, so the system pulls air through traps instead of through the roof. Or a drain line itself is cracked and leaking gas directly into a wall, a floor void, or the ground under the house. That list is short, which is good news: the diagnosis is mostly a matter of elimination, and the first two possibilities are things you can check yourself in a few minutes without any tools at all.

What to check, and where to stop

  1. Ventilate first, and do not trust the smell fadingOpen windows, get air moving, and do not sleep in a room with a persistent strong smell. One thing to know before you go looking: public health guidance is clear that people lose the ability to smell hydrogen sulphide — the main component of sewer gas — after roughly two to fifteen minutes of exposure at higher concentrations. The smell going away is therefore not evidence the problem has gone. It can mean the opposite. Judge by the clock and by how you feel, never by whether you can still smell it.
  2. Stay out of basements, crawlspaces and closed low spacesHydrogen sulphide is heavier than air, so it collects in low and enclosed spaces — which makes a basement, a crawlspace or a sealed utility cupboard the worst possible place to go hunting for the source of a smell. If the smell seems strongest below floor level, that is a reason to stay out and ventilate from outside the space, not a lead to follow. Enclosed low spaces are where sewer gas exposure becomes genuinely dangerous rather than unpleasant.
  3. Rule out a gas leak, because the symptom overlapsNatural gas is odourised with a sulphurous additive, and people do mistake one for the other. If the smell is more like rotten eggs than sewage, or it is near a gas appliance or meter, leave the building, do not operate switches, and call your gas utility from outside. That is a different emergency and it takes priority over everything on this page.
  4. Pour water down every drain you rarely useGuest bathrooms, floor drains, laundry sinks, basement drains. A litre or two refills a dried trap, and if the smell goes within a day you have both diagnosed and fixed it. Do this before anything else — it is free and it is the most common answer.
  5. Test the toilet for movementSit on it and shift your weight gently. Any rocking means the fixing is loose, which lets the seal underneath break and gas escape at floor level. That is a straightforward repair, and it explains a smell that is strongest at the base of the pan.
  6. Note the timing for a few days, then hand it overIf the traps are wet and nothing rocks, the remaining causes are inside walls, in the vent system, or in a buried line — and they are found with a smoke or pressure test, or a camera, rather than by inspection. Your timing notes are what tells whoever does that where to start.

Questions people ask

Is sewer gas in the house dangerous, or just unpleasant?

Both are possible, and the difference is concentration. Trace amounts from a dry trap are mostly a nuisance. Sustained exposure is not: public health guidance describes eye and throat irritation, headache and fatigue at low concentrations of hydrogen sulphide, with people who have asthma reacting at lower levels than others. Two things follow. Do not use the smell as your gauge — the ability to detect it is lost after a few minutes of exposure at higher concentrations, so it fading is not evidence it has gone. And because the gas is heavier than air and settles in low, enclosed spaces, a basement or crawlspace is where a nuisance becomes a hazard. Ventilate, keep out of enclosed low spaces, and do not sleep in an affected room.

I poured water down the drains and it came back. What now?

If refilling a trap only helps temporarily, something is emptying it again — most often siphoning, which happens when the vent system cannot supply air and a large drain event pulls the water out of a nearby trap. That is a vent problem rather than a fixture problem, and it will keep recurring until the vent side is investigated.

Can a smell exist with no leak and no blockage?

Yes, and it is worth checking the cheap explanations before assuming a structural fault. Biological buildup in an overflow, a washing machine standpipe, or a garbage disposal produces a genuinely foul smell with a completely sound drainage system behind it. Those are localised to one fixture, though — a smell that moves around a house is not one of them.

What does a smoke test involve?

Non-toxic smoke is introduced into the drainage system under low pressure, and anywhere it escapes is a place gas can escape too. It finds cracks inside walls, failed seals, and vent faults that no amount of inspection would reveal, because it tests the whole system at once rather than one fixture at a time.
